Local families have a charming new reason to visit John Tucker Park in Everton Park, with children’s author and long-time community advocate Christine Bunn unveiling a free street library and fairy garden designed especially for young readers. Nestled beneath the trees in Everton Park, the space invites children aged roughly 2 to 16 to explore stories, wander through a whimsical garden, and enjoy simple outdoor play — all at no cost. Christine, known for her picture-book collection, has always blended imagination with community spirit. Her stories — including Lollypop Stew, Fredrick Frog and Do You Know You Have a Chicken on Your Head? — are filled with colourful characters and humour, written to spark wonder in young readers. But behind the magic is a lifelong commitment to helping others. Through Bubble & Squeak, she previously offered free formal gown hire to women in need, using the proceeds from her books to support local families. She has since handed the service over to Amity Place, which supports women experiencing domestic violence, and now donates all profits from her books directly to this charity. The Street Library Her latest project extends that same ethos of generosity. Christine says the idea was partly inspired by recent conversations around children’s social media use, and the desire to offer an offline alternative where families can reconnect. The street library encourages parents and children to choose a book, read together in the park, enjoy the fairy garden she built by hand, or simply sit in the sunshine and take a break from busy routines. Visitors can take a book home, bring it back later, or swap it for another — a charming, community-driven exchange. Christine also hopes the library becomes a platform for local children’s authors, giving young readers a chance to discover homegrown talent they might not otherwise encounter. In an era where so much reading is done on screens, the project encourages kids to rediscover the joy of physical books and imaginative play. You can find John Tucker Park at 6 Banek Place, Everton Park. Katie
