I have
never fully understood where we go when we die. It is one of those deep
questions that has always lingered in the back of my mind. Recently, I decided
to look into it a bit deeper and I feel more confident with what I have
discovered. I thought I would share it with you. What do you think?
Imagine
your life as living in a house you love, full of memories, laughter, and life,
but over time that house starts to wear out. One day, you move out; you leave
the house behind.
That is a
little like what happens when we die. Our body (the house) stays behind, but
you (your soul, the real you) step straight into a beautiful new home, right
into God’s presence.
Jesus said
to the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke
23:43). That word today really struck me. It sounds immediate, does it not?
In that
moment, you are safe, happy, and more alive than you have ever been, standing
face to face with Jesus. There is no fear, no waiting, no wandering around
lost. You are home with Him.
Paul also
gives us this encouragement in 2 Corinthians 5:6–8:
“Therefore
we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we
are away from the Lord… We would prefer to be away from the body and at home
with the Lord.”
What a
comfort to know that being “away from the body” means being “at home with the
Lord.”
But that is
not the end of the story!
God has
promised something even greater. One day, Jesus will return to earth. When He
does, He will not just gather our souls, He will also restore our bodies.
Our old,
worn-out “house” will be made brand new, perfect, healthy, strong, and never to
die again.
We will
live forever in a perfect world, with God and His people, full of joy, love,
and life.
The Bible
paints a beautiful picture of that day in Revelation 21:3–4:
“Look!
God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them… He
will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning
or crying or pain.”
This points
to the final future when God makes everything new after the resurrection.
And so, the
story goes like this:
First, you
go straight to Jesus.
Later, when
He returns, everything is made new.
What an
amazing hope we have.
