When I look at this photo of myself, what do I see?
What do you see?
I know I would get a different answer from everyone I asked.
Some might say it is just a selfie, which is true. But when you really think
about that word, selfie, it kind of suggests being self focused, doesn’t it?
Others might think she needs a filter, she needs some work done, or I would
never post a photo like that. Maybe it makes you reflect on your own self
image. Maybe it even prompts thoughts of Botox, booking a facelift, stopping
yourself from smiling in photos, or hiding from photos altogether.
The optimist might say she has lived a life, or maybe even offer a compliment.
When I first saw this photo that I took, yes a selfie, I actually liked what I
saw.
I do occasionally get injectables in my frown line, but I leave the rest of my
face alone. I love my smile wrinkles. That might sound strange, but
they remind me of laughter and joy.
I see a woman, a friend, a wife and a mother. Someone who has won battles and
lost battles.
When I look closer, I notice the grey hairs and wish I could keep my red hair
forever. Something I never thought I would say, because being a red haired
teenager was not for the faint hearted.
And when I zoom in, because let’s be honest we all zoom in on photos, I notice
the scars on my neck. Those scars remind me that we are human and our bodies
are fragile. They also remind me to thank God for the people He has gifted to
help heal us.
I have to remind myself that what I see, others do not.
So next time you look at a photo of yourself and your first reaction is delete,
pause for a moment. Look a little closer. See the beautiful man or woman God
created and be grateful for every grey hair, every line and every imperfection,
because they are what make you special and unique.
