The Healing Touch

Part 2

As we have established our Healthcare nursing care needs a code red call!
Having said that, there is always a positive in every negative situation you just have to search for it. I have been so blessed to have Surgeons, Specialists, ICU Drs, Anaesthetists and GP’s who have truly had my back. I have been able to form trusting professional relationships with my medical team, who have been compassionate, caring, experts in their field, and that have a passionate dedication to planning a successful stay in hospital for me. As you have probably gathered I’m not a simple case, I have many allergies to medication and serve reactions to pain. In my recent admission, I had a Dr who became my knight in shining armour. Whilst in ICU after having my first non epileptic seizure, Dr Rob sat down with me and thoroughly went through my history and medications, and set up a thorough plan for my transfer to the ward. This gave me so much confidence that everything would be ok. Not to the lack of planning or anyone’s fault, my body decided it didn’t like that plan. In the midst of a code red being called for me due to having a non epileptic seizures of 3 1/2 minutes and an extra 3 minutes of being in a catatonic state, I came to and the first person I saw was Dr Robs kind, compassionate face, holding my hand telling me he will sort everything out. His healing touch made me feel safe, I burst into tears of relief, knowing I was going to be ok. My poor husband witnessed everything, he thought I had died. My pain, was managed within minutes. Not only did he manage my pain, his compassion, ‘The Healing Touch,’ healed my soul.

So why is it that our nursing staff have lost the healing touch and our Drs have found it? I suppose no one will ever know. Dr’s have been working in the same healthcare environment as nurses. What has been the trigger and destruction of our nursing care? Is it the teaching, is it COVID, is the work conditions, are the wrong type of people being employed ? Are my expectations too high? Your guess is as good as mine.

All I know is we have to get back to the basics, which is, ‘CARE.’ Without care we are missing the, ‘calling,’ to heal the sick. Notice the word, ‘heal,’ this is why the healing touch should be at the forefront of any Health Care professionals role description. It simply means making someone well again….

Let’s all pray for our health care workers that they once again find the healing touch and when this happened everyone wins.
