One of the greatest gifts God has given us is free will. It is a beautiful and powerful thing, the ability to choose our thoughts, our actions, and the direction of our lives. But with that freedom comes something many of us struggle to accept, consequences.
Too often, when life feels heavy or things begin to fall apart, we find ourselves asking, “Is God punishing me?” It can feel that way in the moment. But the truth is, this belief is not from God. It is a lie that creeps in quietly, distorting who He is.
I used to believe this myself. I thought that my chronic pain and the health issues I have faced were a punishment for my past life, for the mistakes I had made. But over time, I came to realise that this was not the truth. It was a lie that had taken root in my thinking.
God is not a punishing Father waiting for us to fail. He is love. Completely, unwaveringly, and unconditionally. Through Him, we are forgiven. Not partially. Not conditionally. Fully.
What we experience in life is not punishment from God, but the natural result of the choices we make, and sometimes simply the brokenness of living in a fallen world. Free will means we are able to choose both what is good and what is not. And every choice, whether positive or negative, carries a consequence.
Some consequences bring life, peace, and growth. Others bring pain, regret, or hardship. But none of them are God turning His back on us. In fact, even in the middle of our hardest consequences, He is right there with us, offering grace, comfort, and a way forward.
The enemy would love nothing more than for us to believe that God is against us. That He is disappointed, distant, or punishing. Because if we believe that, we pull away from the very One who can restore us.
But the truth is this, God is for you. He always has been.
So when you find yourself questioning, when guilt tries to settle in, or when life feels like it is falling apart, pause and remind yourself, this is not God punishing me. This is a moment to learn, to grow, and to lean into Him even more.
Free will gives us the power to choose, and with that comes responsibility. But it also gives us the opportunity to turn back to God at any moment, no matter what we have done.
And when we do, we are not met with punishment.
We are met with love.
“The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will He harbour His anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” — Psalm 103:8–10
