Barbie Movie

The hype is real, Barbie has ruffled a few feathers to say the least. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, known for her feminist movies along with Noah Baumbach. This movie was sure to have an overtone of women power. As a strong women myself and proud of my femininity, I donned the baby pink ball gown, sparkling jewels and tiara and proudly glided into the cinema with my friend to watch this much awaited movie. Lapping up the electric atmosphere of femininity, beauty, glitz, make believe and fun, my gaze from the screen never moved. I was transported into Barbie land.

It’s subtle but very clever details and script left you questioning if Barbie land was actually real. Even with the feminist storyline, it portrayed both sides of traditional conformities we all face, but tied the struggles together providing a balance between the sexes which left me feeling content.

On the other hand , my son and his mates also went to see the movie, dressed in their sharp Taylor made suits, pink shirts and pink pocket squares, strutting their masculinity, as we as women swanned our femininity, eagerly awaiting an awesome experience.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the case for our young men, who left the movie feeling shunned, emasculated and plain outright trodded on. I found this critique very interesting and concerning at the same time. How can the Barbie movie provoke so many emotions between the sexes?

Life isn’t always fantastic, but it is plastic, so with this conundrum in mind, I think the answer is; live your life the way it makes you feel content, happy and at peace. Don’t try and fit into a mould. Be beautiful, handsome, smart, funny, artistic, musical, kind, unique.
BE YOU. 💕
