When our eldest son brought his first girlfriend into our
lives, my instinct as a mother was to love without hesitation. She
came from a deeply broken family, and I wanted our home to be a place of
refuge, somewhere she could rest, feel safe, and experience stability. Like
many mothers, I followed my heart, believing that offering shelter and care was
the most loving thing I could do.
What I did not yet fully understand was that motherhood requires more than
compassion. It also requires discernment.
Although my intentions were pure, I failed to uphold the boundaries God calls
us to establish within our homes. My husband had concerns, and our daughter
quietly struggled with the arrangement. In my desire to protect one child, I
unintentionally created discomfort for another. This season taught me that
being a godly mother is not about rescuing at all costs, but about seeking
God’s wisdom even when love urges us to act quickly.
One evening, our son returned home from the ICU after his girlfriend’s brother
had attempted suicide. As he walked through the door, I felt a clear prompting
from God: “Call him back and pray for him.” I obeyed immediately. As I prayed
over him, I felt God’s presence settle around him, calming his heart and
bringing peace in the midst of chaos. In that moment, I was reminded that a
mother’s greatest authority is not control, but prayer.
Not long after, our family experienced a deeply unsettling spiritual episode in
our home. One of our sons saw something dark while in the car, and another
unknowingly brought an oppressive presence into the house. As confronting as it
was, this moment became a turning point in my spiritual growth. Through prayer,
worship, and standing firmly in the authority God gives us, that darkness left.
I was reminded that while spiritual opposition may arise, it has no power where
God’s presence is honoured.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7
This season refined me as a mother and deepened my faith. I learned that
motherhood is not only about nurturing hearts, but about guarding the spiritual
atmosphere of our homes. It requires listening closely to God, respecting
boundaries, and trusting His guidance even when it challenges our instincts.
Motherhood, like faith, is a journey of continual surrender. It is shaped
through prayer, obedience, and the humility to recognise when we must grow.
Through this experience, God taught me that true love is not just
open hearted, it is God led.
A Prayer for Mothers
Lord,
Thank You for the gift of motherhood for the love, responsibility, and
calling it carries.
Give us hearts that are compassionate, yet guided by Your wisdom.
Teach us when to open our arms and when to establish boundaries,
and help us to listen closely to Your voice above our own instincts.
Grant us discernment to protect our homes,
courage to act in obedience,
and humility to grow when You reveal new understanding.
When we feel unsure or overwhelmed, remind us that prayer is our greatest
strength
and that You walk with us in every season.
Cover our children, our families, and our homes with Your peace and protection.
May our love always be rooted in truth,
and may our motherhood reflect Your grace.
Amen.
